Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) — commonly called drones — have moved from novelty to practical tool in the crane inspection industry. For tower cranes, tall lattice boom cranes, and other structures where hands-on access is dangerous, expensive, or time-consuming, drones offer a compelling alternative for visual assessment.
But drones are a supplement to traditional inspection — not a replacement. Understanding where they add value, where they fall short, and what regulations govern their use is essential for any crane inspection company considering drone adoption.
Where Drones Add Value in Crane Inspection
Tower Crane Inspections
Tower cranes present unique inspection challenges. The tower sections, slewing mechanism, jib, counter-jib, and trolley mechanism are all at significant height — often 100 to 300+ feet above ground. Traditional inspection requires climbing the tower, which is time-consuming, physically demanding, and creates fall hazards.
Drones can provide detailed visual documentation of:
- Tower section bolted connections — looking for missing, loose, or corroded bolts
- Jib and counter-jib chord members and lacings — cracks, corrosion, deformation
- Trolley rails and rope sheaves
- Pendant connections and rope terminations
- Climbing frame and racking mechanism condition
- Aviation obstruction lighting condition
Lattice Boom Upper Sections

FAA Part 107 Requirements
In the United States, commercial drone operations are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration under 14 CFR Part 107 (Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems). Key requirements for crane inspection drone operations:
Pilot Certification
- The drone pilot (Remote Pilot in Command, or RPIC) must hold a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate
- Certification requires passing an FAA knowledge test covering airspace, weather, regulations, and operations
- Certificates must be renewed every 24 months via recurrent knowledge testing
Operational Rules
- Maximum altitude: 400 feet above ground level (AGL) — unless within 400 feet of a structure, in which case you may fly up to 400 feet above the structure's top
- Visual line of sight (VLOS): The RPIC must maintain visual contact with the drone at all times. This can be assisted by visual observers but cannot be done solely through the camera feed
- Daylight operations: Operations must occur during civil twilight or later, unless the drone is equipped with anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles
- Airspace authorization: Operations in controlled airspace (Class B, C, D, or surface area of Class E) require prior authorization through LAANC or a Part 107 waiver
- Weather minimums: 3 statute miles visibility, must remain clear of clouds
- No flight over people: Without a Part 107 waiver or compliance with updated Category 1-4 rules, drones cannot operate over non-participating people
Waivers
The FAA can grant waivers to certain Part 107 rules when the operator demonstrates they can operate safely under alternative conditions. Common waivers for crane inspection include:
- Night operations (increasingly handled by updated rules rather than waivers)
- Beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) — difficult to obtain but sometimes needed for very large crane structures
- Operations over people — may be needed on active construction sites
Camera and Sensor Capabilities
Visual Cameras
Modern inspection drones carry high-resolution cameras (20-48+ megapixels) capable of capturing detailed images of structural components from distances as close as 3-5 feet. Key features for crane inspection:
- Optical zoom: 4x-30x optical zoom allows detailed examination without flying dangerously close to the structure
- 4K/6K video: Continuous video capture allows review after the flight, catching details that might be missed in individual photos
- Stabilization: 3-axis gimbals provide stable, clear images even in light wind
Thermal Cameras
Thermal imaging can detect:
- Overheating electrical connections
- Bearing failures (generating excess heat from friction)
- Hydraulic leaks (fluid temperature differences)
- Areas of moisture intrusion in enclosed structures
LiDAR and 3D Mapping
Some advanced inspection drones carry LiDAR sensors that can create 3D point cloud models of crane structures. This enables:
- Precise measurement of structural deformation
- Comparison of current geometry to baseline models
- Detection of settlement, tilting, or boom deflection over time
Limitations: What Drones Cannot Do
Despite their capabilities, drones have significant limitations that prevent them from replacing hands-on inspection:
No Physical Interaction
- Drones cannot tap on surfaces to detect delamination or hollow areas
- Cannot perform NDT (magnetic particle, ultrasonic, dye penetrant testing)
- Cannot tighten bolts, take wire rope diameter measurements, or assess play in connections
- Cannot test functional systems — brakes, limit switches, load moment indicators
Environmental Limitations
- Wind: Most inspection drones are limited to winds below 25-30 mph. Gusts near crane structures can be unpredictable
- Rain and precipitation: Most commercial drones are not rated for wet weather operation
- Electromagnetic interference: Power lines, electrical equipment, and radio transmitters near cranes can affect GPS and control signals
- Confined spaces: Drones cannot operate inside enclosed areas where GPS is unavailable (some specialized drones use visual navigation, but at significantly higher cost)
Regulatory Constraints
- Airport proximity restrictions may prevent drone use at some construction sites
- Operations over active construction sites with non-participating workers require waivers or compliance with Category rules
- Some jurisdictions have additional local drone restrictions
Integration with Inspection Reports
Drone-captured data is most valuable when integrated into structured inspection reports:
- Georeferenced images: Photos tagged with GPS coordinates and altitude allow precise identification of where each image was captured on the structure
- Annotation and markup: Inspection software should allow inspectors to annotate drone images — circling deficiencies, adding measurements, and noting severity
- Comparison over time: Capturing the same angles and locations during each inspection enables comparison of progressive deterioration
- Report generation: Drone images should be embedded directly in inspection reports with descriptions and findings, not provided as a separate photo dump

Current Adoption Trends
Drone use in crane inspection is growing steadily, driven by several factors:
- Insurance companies are beginning to recognize drone inspection as a best practice, particularly for tower cranes and other high-access equipment
- Crane rental companies are using drones for pre-delivery and return condition documentation — establishing equipment condition before and after each rental
- Tower crane erection and dismantling companies use drones to document bolt-up and alignment during assembly
- Training programs are emerging that combine Part 107 certification with crane-specific inspection training
The technology is mature enough for practical use today, but the regulatory and industry standards frameworks are still catching up. ASME and OSHA have not yet issued specific guidance on drone-assisted crane inspection, so inspection companies must develop their own procedures and quality controls.
What's clear is that drones are a tool — not a replacement for qualified inspectors. The inspector's knowledge, judgment, and hands-on assessment remain irreplaceable. Drones simply give that inspector eyes in places that were previously difficult, dangerous, or impossible to reach.
