Competent Person

A person capable of identifying existing and predictable crane hazards and authorized to take corrective measures.

OSHA defines a competent person as one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them. For crane operations, competent persons typically perform shift and monthly inspections, ground condition assessments, and rigging inspections. Unlike qualified persons, competent persons do not need formal certifications but must have adequate training and knowledge specific to the equipment.
