Critical Lift

A crane lift that exceeds a specified percentage of rated capacity or involves unusual hazards requiring extra planning.

In Detail

A critical lift is generally defined as any lift that exceeds 75% of the crane's rated capacity at the maximum radius, involves lifting personnel, requires multiple cranes, passes over occupied areas, or involves other unusual hazards. The specific threshold varies by company policy — some use 80% or 90%. Critical lifts always require a formal, written lift plan reviewed and approved by qualified personnel before the operation begins. They typically require additional safety measures such as tag lines, dedicated signal persons, barricaded areas, and pre-lift meetings with all involved personnel.
