Pre-Operation Check

A systematic visual and functional check performed by the operator before using the crane each shift.

In Detail

A pre-operation check is the operator's systematic review of the crane before beginning work each shift. It typically includes checking fluid levels, inspecting wire rope condition, verifying safety device function (LMI, anti-two-block, boom stops), testing controls, checking for hydraulic leaks, inspecting outrigger pads and tires, reviewing the load chart availability, and ensuring all guards and covers are in place. While overlapping with the shift inspection, pre-operation checks are specifically operator-focused — ensuring the operator is familiar with the crane's condition before assuming control. Many companies use standardized checklist forms or digital inspection apps for consistency.
