Wire Rope Inspection

Examination of crane wire ropes for broken wires, corrosion, kinks, crushing, and diameter reduction.

In Detail

Wire rope inspection is a critical component of both shift and periodic crane inspections. Inspectors look for broken wires (OSHA specifies maximum acceptable counts), corrosion, kinking, crushing, bird-caging, diameter reduction, and end connection integrity. The number of allowable broken wires depends on the rope construction and whether they are in one lay length or at end connections. Severe wire rope deterioration requires immediate removal from service. Documentation should include the location, type, and severity of any defects found, along with corrective actions taken.
